Ah, 4th of July. Well, I guess living here in the mountains of northern Italy is a fair tradeoff for not seeing the fireworks in a sweltering heat wave, fighting traffic jams, etc. [-grin].
Today I decided we'd head out to the new apartment. For one thing
we needed to stock it up with the necessities
like soap, toilet paper, etc. I didn't want to take the chance of
us moving in after all the local supermarkets were closed. It was
a good thing we showed up today too. While the electricity was turned
on, the owner had to throw a breaker in the basement to feed us.
And
while rummaging about the apartment trying to figure out how to get the
power on myself, I found that the water heater was installed, but not wired
up to the electric. I called the owner and he did come over.
He turned the electric on and came up to see the heater. He said
he would have someone come in on Monday to wire it up. I think the
kids and I are going to check out of the hotel on Sunday instead of Saturday
now. I don't see how we can live very long without hot water.
So just to be safe, we'll stay in the hotel until Sunday. The outside
of the building is in a pastel yellow. In fact, most of the buildings
around here are in pastel colors of green, yellow or orange. Very
California looking actually.
Our apartment is on the first floor (not the ground floor you yanks) and
you can see the balcony right above Stephen and Kristie's head.
You
can see that our kitchen and living area are one and the same. There
is actually enough room to throw in a couch, which wasn't included.
I will throw something in there because I do need one more sleeping space
in the apartment. I'll have to look around for a fold out couch or
something. Hopefully the delivery charge is not too much. The
view outside of this space is through a double door that opens out and
has a roll down shutter on it. The foreground is the owner's vin
yard and his house is in the far left at the other end of the vin yard.
There are chickens rummaging around there and the kids want to do nothing
more than chase the chickens. Apparently a habit they picked up living
in the sticks of North Carolina. The views you see here
are the same from the bedroom which is next door. If you step out
onto the balcony you get a great view of the mountains to the west.
Our apartment is south facing so we get plenty of sun light. There
are mountains to the east but the building is in the shape of an L and
blocks out that view. Additionally, there is a small balcony on the
bathroom too, with a west facing view of the mountains.
At about 17h00 the owner showed up with some girl from the tourist office that spoke English. She had brought with her a bunch of plates and silverware for us. Why the girl from the tourist office is delivering this stuff is beyond me. Turns out she too is originally from Naples and going home on holiday for the next couple of weeks. We've met a lot of people from Naples here. Must be something nice here to convince them to all move north.
That was pretty much our day. We caught the bus back to town after the girl made her delivery. We stopped off in the city centre at our gelataria and of course ate gelato again. Headed off to the super mercati to grab some food for dinner and got into the hotel just as the sky opened up with rain. It had been feeling like rain for about an hour so we timed it well. The kids and I showered, ate dinner and they are both in bed now.
One interesting thing we've found out. Trento is full of lizards! I was actually suprised to see them. Kristie asked if there were any lizards here for her to catch and really didn't think there would be. But they are here so she's had her fun trying to catch them.
CNN said that there would not be any Mars shots for another couple of hours. I'm hoping I can stay awake long enough to see them. Otherwise I guess I'll catch the shots tomorrow.
