| One problem with TMN and current network elements is the
sheer mind boggling number of object instances that have to be supported.
With some of the newer ATM switches out there you can easily have tens of
thousands (nowadays hundreds of thousands) of object instances. Agents for
these types of elements require hardware with both significant processing
and memory capability. The bigger the better is an adage to live by. An SMP (symetrical multiprocessor) machine with gigabytes of RAM is a minimum for some setups if your looking at over half a million object instances and still expecting a reasonable response time from the agent. For something running in the 10,000 object instance range you can probably get away with a unix box and 128 megs of RAM. |
